Combined EXSS/MSAT Program

Frostburg State University offers a unique opportunity for students interested in becoming an athletic trainer to pursue a combined Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science/Master of Science in Athletic Training program (BS/MSAT). This is an accelerated five-year program where students will earn both degrees in just five years!

High school seniors accepted to FSU may apply for early entry into the Combined Program. First-year or sophomore FSU Exercise & Sport Science major students may also apply to the Combined Program prior to their third year of study.

Students in the program will take up to 9 graduate credits while an undergraduate student, which will count toward both the undergraduate AND graduate degrees.

A high school student applying for the direct entry program as a first-year student must apply to the University and complete the BS/MSAT supplemental application by March 1st, which includes a personal statement and two letters of reference. Students must also meet a 1270 SAT-I Composite Score by March 1. Upon submitting all required BS/MSAT supplemental application documents, selected students will be invited for an interview. Selected students will also be required to participate in an interview process to determine admission.

FSU first-year or sophomore Exercise & Sport Science major students may apply to the combined program, submitting all required BS/MSAT program supplemental application documents no later than March 1st prior to the third year of study and will be required to meet the following admission requirements:

Students admitted to the combined BS/MSAT program will be required to follow the BS/MSAT plan of study determined by the AT program director, maintain a 3.0的绩点 and obtain a B-grade or better in all MSAT prerequisite courses. This BS/MSAT plan of study includes required summer sessions.

Students will be officially admitted to the Professional MSAT Program during the spring semester of their third year of study. Once the MSAT Program Director has approved all admission criteria has been met, students will be enrolled in the following graduate-level courses that will also satisfy the requirements for the undergraduate Exercise & Sport Science degree. These credits will also be counted toward the required 64 graduate-credits for the Master of Science in Athletic Training degree.

EXSS/MSAT Program Application for All First-Year Students

NOTE: Students admitted to the BS/MSAT program must meet all requirements outlined for progression into the MSAT program prior to matriculation into the graduate program. During the spring semester of the students’ third year of study, the student must:

    1. Meet with the MSAT Program Director to determine all prerequisites have been met.
    2. Complete Physical Examination & Medical 历史 forms.
    3. Read and sign the Technical Standards and Assumption of Risk Form.
    4. Provide a copy of required vaccination record including Hepatitis B vaccine.
    5. Provide proof of criminal background check.

Students who meet all MSAT Program matriculation requirements will be recommended to FSU’s Graduate Office and officially enrolled in the MSAT Year 1 summer courses.

Students who do not meet the requirements for matriculation into the MSAT program, can continue in the Exercise and Sport Science major to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science upon successful completion of all degree program requirements.

Application Review Process

The Professional MSAT Program application criteria and process is utilized for both the Combined EXSS/MSAT Program as well as the Professional MSAT Program.

Retention/Maintaining Good Standing in the Professional ATP

Once admitted, the Athletic Training student must maintain the following standards to remain fully admitted:

1. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
2. A minimum grade of “B” in each of the required courses in the program.
3. Maintain current certifications in Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid.
4. Attendance at the annual OSHA blood borne pathogens presentation.

Students who fail to meet standards #1 and/or #2 have one academic year to correct the deficiency before being dismissed from the ATP.

Violations of #3 and/or #4 will result in an immediate suspension of clinical experiences until the student is in compliance.

Student Travel to Clinical Experience Site

Students will be given the opportunity to gain clinical experience at a variety of locations. In many cases the clinical setting will be off-campus. In these cases, students will be responsible for traveling to and from their primary clinical site at the student's expense. This includes, but is not limited to, the expenses associated with fuel and parking. The ATP is not responsible for costs or damages incurred while traveling to or from the clinical sites. This policy pertains to both on campus and off campus sites.

Additional 成本s to the Athletic Training Program

  • $40 Required/approved uniforms (minimum of 1 uniform shirt and 1 set of khakis slacks/shorts). Rain gear and 1 game day uniform polo will be provided. Additional clothing is suggested, but not mandatory: cold gear, weather appropriate shoes/boots, 帽子, 和手套.
  • $78 NATA membership dues (includes NATA, MAATA and MATA dues, and ATrack access).
  • $45 FSU fingerprinting fee required for criminal history background check. If a student has already been fingerprinted from a previous employer, the student must provide proof/documentation. Inoculations current with OSHA requirements for healthcare providers. Others may be required by affiliate sites.
  • $36 American Red Cross Professional Rescuer Certification fee.
  • $50-$100 Travel costs: Students are responsible for all travel costs during clinical education experiences. 成本 may vary depending on geographical local and clinical setting (2 to 15 miles from FSU), cost of gas during specific off-campus rotation, and opportunities to car-pool.
